Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short, is probably the single most important factor in determining whether your well designed, well created site is going to perform well. It’s no good having a great looking website that no-one visits. This is where SEO comes in.
The primary purpose of SEO is to make sure that when people type for ‘keywords’ related to your website into the search engines (e.g. Google, Bing and Yahoo) your site appears at or near the top of the search results (Search Engine Results Pages, or SERPs for short). We should all know how important it is to be on that first page of the SERPs – very rarely do any of us have to go beyond page 1 to find what we are looking for!
So SEO is the only way to achieve good organic positioning in the SERPs, and traffic from organic listings is a cornerstone to a successful website and it is usually achieved in 2 ways; on-site SEO and off-site SEO.
In a nutshell, on-site SEO means ensuring the design and content of your website let both the visitor and the search engines know what your site is all about.
Optimising the design and content includes paying attention to things like your website URL, navigation structure, design and formatting principles, META tags, and above all else, your site’s copy. The key to good copy is to write it so that it reads naturally but also ‘pleases’ the search engines. Gone are the days of writing unnatural copy just to please the search engines. Copy should, first and foremost, sell your website to the reader and be as natural as possible, but be written intelligently enough to persuade the search engines of the relevance of it’s subject matter.
Whenever we create a website we always ensure it has great on-site SEO as standard.
Off-site SEO refers to the many practices employed to gain incoming links to your website. These ‘back-links’, as they are often known, are vitally important as they are like ‘votes’ for your website in the eyes of the search engines. However, it is definitely the quality of the back-link that counts above the quantity. Many companies promise 100′s and even 1000′s of back-links for very small amounts of money, but please don’t be tempted by these offers. You will more likely harm your website’s ranking than help it. A few good quality links from high Page Rank, relevant sites will easily outweigh 100′s of poor quality, unrelated links.
Our Off-Site SEO packages are an additional service to our website design, creation and on-site SEO service, but are realistically priced and have a credible and verifiable track record of success.
